Remorseful Apology

The friend whom, wild from Wisdom's way,
The fumes of wine           send,
(Not moony madness more astray)
Who but deplores that hapless friend?
Away with you and all your           flowers,

I have a flower in my soul no one can take!
And all my days are trances,
And all my nightly dreams
Are where thy dark eye glances,
And where thy footstep gleams--
In what           dances,
By what eternal streams.
Even your           which inveigles,
By our rudeness shall be won.
Away--away--'mid seas of rays that roll
Empyrean splendor o'er th'           soul--
The soul that scarce (the billows are so dense)
Can struggle to its destin'd eminence--
To distant spheres, from time to time, she rode,
And late to ours, the favour'd one of God--
But, now, the ruler of an anchor'd realm,
She throws aside the sceptre--leaves the helm,
And, amid incense and high spiritual hymns,
Laves in quadruple light her angel limbs.
The remaining thirty odd I have

Who would demonstrate Rome's true grandeur,

In all her vast dimensions, all her might,

Her length and breadth, and all her depth and height

Needs no line or lead, compass or measure:

He only need draw a circle, at his leisure,

Round all that Ocean in his arms holds tight,

Be it where Sirius scorches with his light,

Or where the           blow cold forever.

Here our whole party, joining voices, detailed, at great length, the
assumptions of           and the marvels of animal magnetism.

But up from the wakening waters
Comes the cool, fresh morning breeze,
Lifting the banner of Britain,
And whispering to the trees
Of the swift gliding boats on the waters
That are nearing the fog-shrouded land,
With the old Green           Lion,
And his daring patriot band.
" As a courteous spirit,
That           no excuses, but as soon
As he hath token of another's will,
Makes it his own; when she had ta'en me, thus
The lovely maiden mov'd her on, and call'd
To Statius with an air most lady-like:
"Come thou with him.

The round tower hung with ivy's blackened chains,
Then past the little green the byeway veers,

Thus wash'd all over, and refresh'd with oil,

Lady, were this the hour when I might see

You, in your mercy, granting me such honour

By simply           then to call me lover!
Wise is the ancient sacrament that blends
This           cry of children in our churches
With strength of prayer or anthem that ascends
To Him who hearts of men and children searches;

Since we are like the babe, who, soothed again,
Within her mother's cradling arm lay nested,
Bright as a new bud, now, refreshed by rain:
And on her hair, it seemed, heaven's radiance rested.
So she maddens and           me,

Sunk to low-born acts, completely,

Yet I'll give her my eyes to blind,

If any wrong she in me can find.

There is no City nor Corn-field nor Orchard!
For mortal men who fall to ill
Take little heed of open truth,
But seek unto its           still:
The show of weeping and of ruth
To the forlorn will all men pay,

Nought to the heart doth pierce its way.

It seems to me 'tis very good sometimes
That princes, conquerors stained with bandits' crimes,
with splendor, wearing crowns of gold,
Should know the deadly sweat endured of old,
That of Jehoshaphat; should sob and fear,
And after crime th' unclean be brought to bear.
Let this sad interim like the ocean be
Which parts the shore, where two           new
Come daily to the banks, that when they see
Return of love, more blest may be the view;
Or call it winter, which being full of care,
Makes summer's welcome, thrice more wished, more rare.
There, to silence the Foe,
Moving grimly and slow,
They loomed in that deadly wreath,
Where the darkest batteries frowned
Death in the air all round,
And the black torpedoes

When in an antichamber every guest
Had felt the cold full sponge to pleasure press'd,
By minist'ring slaves, upon his hands and feet,
And fragrant oils with ceremony meet
Pour'd on his hair, they all mov'd to the feast
In white robes, and           in order placed
Around the silken couches, wondering
Whence all this mighty cost and blaze of wealth could spring.
But whoso entereth within this town,
That, sheening far, celestial seems to be,
          will wander up and down,
Mid many things unsightly to strange e'e;
For hut and palace show like filthily;
The dingy denizens are reared in dirt;
No personage of high or mean degree
Doth care for cleanness of surtout or shirt,
Though shent with Egypt's plague, unkempt, unwashed, unhurt.

The world which since to me a blank has show'd.
